Creaks is a platform adventure game developed by Amanita Design.[2] It is the first major game by Amanita Design that is not a point & click adventure.[3] It was announced on 9 October 2018.[4] The game was released on 10 July 2020 for Apple Arcade.[5]

Development[edit]

Radim Jurda and Jan Chlup came up with the idea for Creaks while at university, during which time they created various prototypes using Flash as their graduation work. They eventually met Jakub Dvorský, who started helping them with the project with his advice. Their project caught Dvorský's attention and Jurda with Chlup were allowed to join Amanita Design, forming a small team within the studio to develop the game.[6][7] Originally, the game was to be titled 'Pareidolia'. It was then changed to 'Blik', and then again to the final title 'Creaks', because a game named 'Blik' already existed.[8] The game was officially revealed on 9 October 2018 with a short teaser trailer uploaded to Amanita Design's YouTube channel.[4] The budget of the game surpassed 20 Million CZK.[8]

The game was released after eight years of development for Apple Arcade on 10 July 2020 with the PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions being announced for later in the month.[9][10][11] The Nintendo Switch version was in the works at the time of initial release.[6] On 14 July 2020, the release date for PC and consoles was announced as 22 July 2020.[11][12]

Plot[edit]

Creaks begins in the bedroom of the unnamed player character, who is seen sitting at his desk when the light flickers and dies, and the wallpaper peels away to reveal a secret tunnel behind his wall. The protagonist ventures through the newly-discovered tunnel and, after climbing down a ladder, finds himself in a massive mansion-like structure contained within an enormous cavern. He encounters aggressive monsters that become harmless inanimate objects when seen under the light. He also discovers that there is a giant feline monster slowly destroying the mansion by climbing on it.

While exploring the underground world, the protagonist also meets several friendly bird-like people; an elderly bird person searching for a codex in order to defeat the giant monster, a younger bird person who tries to fight it with weapons and traps, a scientist bird person, and a small mechanic with a pipe for a head.

The protagonist eventually reaches the bottom of the mansion, where he finds the scientist and the mechanic fighting the giant monster. It swallows the mechanic before retreating, and the scientist, saddened, leads the protagonist to her workshop, where it is revealed that she originally built the giant creature to power the mansion. The elder then arrives with the codex and reveals plans about a crystal, which the scientist builds a container lantern for. She then takes the protagonist further down into the sewers in search of it. He finds the crystal in a cavern and puts it into the lantern, creating a light that can defeat the giant monster.

They begin climbing back up to the top of the mansion, regroup with the other two bird folk, and prepare to fight the monster. The protagonist jumps into its mouth, encountering the mechanic still alive - the monster is entire made out of household objects. The protagonist releases the crystal, destroying the monster and rescuing the mechanic in the process. With the monster defeated, the protagonist says goodbye to the bird folk and climbs back up to his bedroom, closes the entrance to the underground world behind his wallpaper, and opens his window to find that it is now day time.

Gameplay[edit]

Creaks is a 2D puzzle-platform game.[13] The player controls a person who crawls through a hole in his bedroom wall and discovers a subterranean world home to various monsters called Creaks, which are inspired by a phenomenon called pareidolia: when the monsters encounter light, they turn into ordinary household objects that they otherwise resemble.[14] The player has to avoid these monsters and solve puzzles in order to advance through the game.[15] Puzzles generally revolve around the use of buttons, switches, lights, and mechanical devices to bypass enemies, which turn into furniture when exposed to light, and reach the next area. Solving puzzles requires logical thinking and an understanding of the movements and behaviors of the various monsters.[6][1]

Besides the main storyline, the game contains various paintings inspired by 18th and 19th century aesthetics. These pictures serve as collectibles, and many also contain minigames or interactive elements that metaphorically work as windows to another world.[6][16]

The game has received very positive reviews following its release.[19] Nathan Birch, in his review for Wccftech, gave the game 9.5 points out of 10. He stated that 'Creaks renovates a well-worn genre, delivering one of the most satisfying indie puzzle-platformers in some time. Between its stunning visual and audio design, absorbing world, and perfectly-balanced puzzles, it’s hard to find serious fault with any part of this game’s construction.'[20] Noelle Adams of Critical Hit gave the game 8 points out of 10. She called it a 'wonderfully weird puzzle platformer.' She primarilty praised the visuals, atmosphere and gameplay. She also praised the game's soundtrack.[21] Kieron Verbugge of Well-Played also gave the game 8 points out of 10. He praised the game's puzzles, aesthetic and audio production. On the other hand, he complained about lack of any hint system and some puzzle concepts.[22] Liam Croft of Push Square gave the game 9 points out of 10. He praised the game's puzzles, hand-drawn art style, story, and soundtrack.[23] Steve Caife of Slant Magazine gave 3.5 star out of 5 stating that 'the game does lack some of the sense of accomplishment and “ah-ha” moments of the best puzzle games. Reasonably clever though Creaks may be, it’s primarily a vehicle for Amanita’s brand of typically immaculate artistry, augmented here by the way the jangly music from composer Hidden Orchestra changes as the puzzle pieces fall into place. Though you encounter familiar configurations of levers and passageways and other obstacles, the mansion’s rooms all feel distinct, subtly interconnected in a way you likely won’t even notice unless you hit the load screen and see that every puzzle is coherently plotted on a zoomed-out side view of the mysterious mansion. Creaks hums along smoothly and pleasantly without calling attention to itself, to its sporadic detriment but mainly to its strength.'[24]

Go to the chandelier and spin the light bulb to stop flickering. Sit down at the table and then repeat the steps. Examine the peeled piece of wallpaper on the wall on the right. Try to sit down, and then spin the light bulb again. This time it will explode and the curtain will close the window. Examine the hatch on the wall on the right where the wallpaper has come off. The main character will take a lantern, and you can crawl through the tunnel to the right. Go down the stairs.

When the game prompts you to do this, get off the stairs, run to the left and go down another one. Walk to the right and climb up to find yourself in a room with a hole in the floor. You can jump down through this hole to the left of the stairs. Do so, then jump over the nearest hole, and then go down through the next. Continue downhill, jump over large holes. Eventually, a new staircase will appear on the left. Climb down it.

Go to the right, jump down and even lower you will see the dog. Jump down to him. He will start chasing the hero. You run to the left, climb the stairs, follow the right again and use the stairs, which was guarded by the monster. Get down even lower.

Distract another dog by jumping into the hole on the left. Climb back up the stairs, run to the right where the dog was sitting, and climb even higher up another staircase. Walk all the way to the left and turn the handle on the wall. This will raise the gate that was blocking the path. Jump down through the hole in the middle of the tier to get back to the dog. Run to the left, this time jump over the hole in the floor to reach the stairs. Previously, it was hidden behind the gate. Go downstairs. The earthquake will start again.

Approach the wall on the left and look through the gap. You will see a light and a dog. Climb up, go to the stairs on the right and follow even higher. There will be a handle here. Turn it to raise one and lower the other gate. Go down the stairs to the left so the dog can see you. Lure her to the stairs and return to the handle. Rotate it to cut off the path to the left for the dog. Go down the stairs to the right and lure the dog to it. Having done this, go upstairs again and turn the handle. The dog is now cut off from you and is on your right. You go down the stairs on the left, go to the place where it was, and move even lower.

Go to the illuminated staircase. You will see that the dog is wary of the light. Go down, jump from the ledges even lower into the lighted room. Push the bedside table to the broken staircase on the left and use it to jump upstairs. Climb higher and higher to be to the left of the dog. Jump down to the left. Go down the left stairs and run to the right to distract the first dog. Then jump down through the hole in the floor to the far dog and run to the nearest stairs on the right. Both dogs will stop at this staircase. You jump through the hole on the left and run to the left. Jump over the pit and go up the stairs. Stop on the penultimate floor, go right and turn the handle to raise the gate. Walk to the right so that the dog sees you, then run to the left and climb even higher along the far stairs. Click on the switch on the wall. You will see that the dog turns into a bedside table in the light. Go downstairs, push the curbstone under the partially broken staircase on the right and jump onto it. At the top, use another ladder that will allow you to go down.

Creaks Game Walkthrough

Walk left and look at the painting hanging on the lighted wall. Follow the hole down and lure the dog. Click on the switch on the left when the dog is under the second lamp. Then use the second switch and press the first one again, having previously moved the curbstone under the left lamp. Turn it off, run to the right to the far switch and click on it when the dog is under the penultimate lamp. Click on the switch slightly to the left to light the second lamp on the right side of the room. Now you can move the curbstone under the broken staircase and go upstairs. Leave the level.

Go down the stairs and head right. You will fall down to two dogs, but the light comes on. Hit the switch, then go right and go up the stairs. Jump down from the right side, go to the dog and go up the stairs to the room with the curbstone and light. Move the cabinet to the pressure plate in the middle of the room to turn on the light. Go downstairs, jump over the curbstone and climb the far stairs. Walk to the right and go down the stairs. Lure the lower dog to her, go upstairs and lure another dog to the stairs. Quickly return to the stairs and stay in the middle. The upper dog will run to the stairs and turn on the light, turning the lower one into a curbstone. Go up the stairs on the right to lure the top dog towards it. Go downstairs and lure the lower dog to the same stairs. It will sit on the pressure plate, turning on the light and turning the dog on top into a curbstone. With it, you can get to the stairs.

Go up to the upper room and turn the handle to raise the right and lower the left gate. Go down to the middle floor and lure the dog on the right. Climb back up to the room with the handle and turn it to block the dog’s path back. She will stop at the gate on the right. Go down to the floor, go to the dog on the left, and when she sees you, then run to the stairs on the right, which is surrounded by two pressure plates. Two dogs will press on both plates! Head down to the room below, which is now lit up, and then head up the stairs on the right, between the two dogs. Continue moving, use a couple of stairs, along the way you see a strange creature. Climb up, lure the dog and run to the left. Jump down, go up the stairs again and lure the same dog to it. It will stop at the pressure plate. Run quickly to the right and jump onto the broken staircase using the curbstone.
