Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer over a year ago when it was a short Alpha demo, Songbird Symphony is now gearing up for a release at the end of July. It’s a cheerful rhythm action platforming adventure where you control a cute little orphaned bird called Birb, who goes on a journey to find out who he is and where he came from.
The gameplay in Songbird Symphony is split up into semi-open world platforming sections and rhythm action boss battles (though they’re more like jam sessions with friends than traditional boss fights). In the platforming sections Birb can run and jump through the game world as in any platformer, but he can also use his singing to interact with other creatures and objects. In each area there are optional objectives you can complete to help other animals and earn you a musical note in the process. The boss battles on the other hand see you listening and repeating different melodies, a little like in the Playstation classic, Parappa the Rapper.

The current build of Songbird Symphony features around 20 minutes of gameplay, with two large sections of woodland to explore and two musical boss boss battles. It does a great job of teaching you the intricacies of your singing abilities and the game world is a joy to explore, packed full of vibrant visuals and cheerful woodland creatures. A particular highlight is your uncle Pea – a very funky little peacock who really busts a groove.

Songbird Symphony’s fusion of Parappa the Rapper-esque rhythm action and puzzle platforming works incredibly well and the combination of charming characters, catchy tunes and vibrant visuals mean there’s a big smile on your face the entire time you play it. A delightful musical adventure well worth singing about.
